Work-Life Balance - With Grace Atticks

How do you balance work and life?

Balancing both work and life can be challenging when it feels like my business IS my life! As both an anxious + highly dedicated person, I can easily go into obsession mode and spend every waking moment preoccupied with what's going right (and what's going wrong) with my salon, clients, and employees.

Truly, leaning on my support system has been monumental. God didn't intend for us to do this life alone, and I'm so thankful that He designed us as relational beings! My husband, Carson, is incredibly supportive of my work and does what he can to assist me and reduce my mental load. My parents and in-laws are always ready to jump in and lend a helping hand. I've been learning to let go of my pride and ask for help when I have a particularly draining day.

How do you make time for Sabbath/rest?

My husband and I do our best to dedicate Sundays to resting, the Lord, spending time with our families, and resetting for the week ahead. Honestly, the best thing I've done to prioritize the Sabbath and resting is to schedule specific times to completely check out of my business. I have a completely separate work phone that I turn off and put away. I have automated systems in place behind the scenes to keep things running without me. I try to steer myself away from conversations regarding my business. (And when I find my brain wandering back to the business, I'm learning to ask the Lord to provide me with peace and a clear mind.)

What would you suggest to a busy business owner looking for a break but just can’t with so many things to do?

I've found that when it feels near impossible to take a break and separate yourself from work, it helps a TON to be ridiculously organized and create lists. Creating lists gives you the opportunity to write out the different tasks swirling around in your brain. I handwrite my weekly tasks in order of importance, and make note of the various due dates. This process is therapeutic, efficient, reduces anxiety (no more wondering if you forgot something!), and helps me to see where I can delegate tasks and reduce my workload.
